Who Can Be Fooled? Modeling Facial Impressions of Gullibility

نویسندگان

چکیده

The success of acts deceit and exploitation depends on how trusting naïve (i.e., gullible) targets are. In three preregistered studies, using both theory-driven data-driven approaches, we examined people form impressions gullibility based targets' facial appearance. We find significant consensus in impressions, suggesting that have a somewhat shared representation what gullible person looks like (Study 1, n = 294). Gullibility is different cues than trustworthiness or dominance they constitute dissociable stereotypes 2, 403). Deep Text Classification Can be Fooled

Deep neural networks (DNNs) play a key role in many applications. Current studies focus on crafting adversarial samples against DNN-based image classifiers by introducing some imperceptible perturbations to the input. However, DNNs for natural language processing have not got the attention they deserve. In fact, the existing perturbation algorithms for images cannot be directly applied to text....

Facial First Impressions Across Culture: Data-Driven Modeling of Chinese and British Perceivers' Unconstrained Facial Impressions.

People form first impressions from facial appearance rapidly, and these impressions can have considerable social and economic consequences. Three dimensions can explain Western perceivers' impressions of Caucasian faces: approachability, youthful-attractiveness, and dominance. Can Agents with Causal Misperceptions be Systematically Fooled?∗

Can a policy maker lead an agent to form systematically biased economic forecasts? This possibility is ruled out by the conventional rational-expectations postulate. I revisit this question and assume that the agent misperceives causal relations among economic variables, which may lead to non-rational expectations. The agent forms forecasts of economic variables after observing the policy maker...

"The foolmaster who fooled them".

Throughout the nineteenth century, physicians assumed the major task of analyzing and warning against quackery and unorthodoxy. The nature of this criticism is described, with key reliance on Worthington Hooker's Lessons from the History of Medical Delusions (1850). Most physicians viewed prospects for suppressing quackery more hopefully than Hooker did. Even he, however, would be shocked that ...

Modeling first impressions from highly variable facial images.

First impressions of social traits, such as trustworthiness or dominance, are reliably perceived in faces, and despite their questionable validity they can have considerable real-world consequences. We sought to uncover the information driving such judgments, using an attribute-based approach. Attributes (physical facial features) were objectively measured from feature positions and colors in a...
